On June 22nd, the "Guangzhou New Observation" Village Revitalization and the Southern Guangdong Ancient Post Road Academic Roundtable Meeting jointly organized by Guangzhou Social Science Association, Jinan University, and Nanfang Daily was held in Jinan University. Guo Zhuangshi, deputy director of Provincial Housing and Urban-Rural Development Department attended the meeting and made a keynote speech. Prof. Xia Quan, deputy secretary of the Party Committee of Jinan University, attended the meeting and delivered a speech. Tan Xiaohong, Vice Chairman of the Guangzhou Social Science Association chaired the conference. Qiu Yanqing, director of the institute was invited to attend the conference and make a keynote report. In addition, experts, scholars and students from the scientific research institutes and universities including the Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, South China University of Technology, Jinan University, South China Agricultural University, and Guangdong University of Technology participated in the conference.

At the Conference

In the conference, Dean Qiu Yanqing made a keynote report titled "Building a Bridge between Cultural Self-Confidence and Rural Revitalization - A New Vision of Revitalizing Village though Post Roads". Mr. Qiu explained the theoretical basis of the new vision of post roads village from three aspects of the new pattern of social governance, the new path of urban governance, and the new logic of rural governance. By combining the Guangdong Greenway with the ancient post roads of Southern Guangdong, he summarized the experience of major project construction methods characterized by passing of “ways” and “roads”, and exploration of both “ways” with “co-construction” as the core.

In the light of the policy direction of the national and provincial strategies of village revitalization, Mr. Qiu proposed the relationship between the ancient post roads in Southern Guangdong and rural areas, which is featured by the “strategic co-existence”, economically “complementary”, spatially “linked” and the culturally “rooted”. Moreover, he cited the examples to illustrate the fact that the integration and mutual promotion of the conservation and utilization of ancient post roads in Southern Guangdong, and the conservation, utilization and construction of ancient post roads are conducive to promote the revitalization of the countryside, and finally realize the cultural self-confidence based on the revitalization of village through post roads.

Finally, based on reflections on the issues of rural planning and construction, the same root of the ancient post roads and village culture, as well as learning the advanced experience, etc., Mr. Qiu proposed that the conservation and activation of the ancient post roads in Southern Guangdong should be highly integrated with the strategy for rural revitalization, and combined with the construction of rural governance system. By inspiring the principle role of grassroots and the villagers in the conservation and utilization of the ancient post roads, and making efforts at the “Same Origin of Village Roads and Culture”, it is able to ensure the cultural construction and make good use of the “key method” of the policy mechanism of rural revitalization as well as build a bridge between cultural confidence and the rural revitalization through joint construction, governance and shared benefits.

The participating experts also exchanged ideas on the topics including construction instances of ancient post roads in Southern Guangdong, reflections and practice of the ancient post roads in Southern Guangdong as the cultural route, the value and utilization of ancient post roads in Southern Guangdong in the revitalization of rural economy, and the value remodeling in the construction of ancient post roads in Southern Guangdong, etc.
